One of the biggest rifts that the Democratic Party is currently dealing with concerns whether or not House Democrats should move forward with impeachment proceedings. Before Robert Mueller released his final report, Democrats were confident that Mueller would give them the evidence needed for impeachment. When that evidence never came through, a divide was created in the party.
Many House Democrats, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, put the hope of impeachment on the backburner, recognizing that moving forward with impeachment without any evidence would do more harm than good – especially considering that the GOP still controls the Senate.
Other House Democrats, though, haven’t been so willing to let the dream of impeaching Donald Trump die out. New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is so mad about not moving forward with impeachment proceedings that she’s attacking Nancy Pelosi like a petulant child for ruining her dream.
In a recent interview with ABC News, Ocasio-Cortez said, “I think every day that passes the pressure to impeach grows. It’s justifiable. I think the evidence continues to come in and I believe that with the president now saying that he’s willing to break the law to win re-election, that — that goes — that transcends partisanship. It transcends party lines. This is now about the rule of law in the United States of America.”
When asked about the rumored animus toward Pelosi from the progressive wing of the Democrat Party – of which Ocasio-Cortez is a part of – Ocasio-Cortez responded, saying, “I think it’s quite real. I believe there is a very real animus and desire to make sure that we holding this President to account.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s animosity toward Pelosi, though, isn’t likely to change the Speaker of the House’s views on impeachment. Nancy Pelosi may be right up there with Ocasio-Cortez when it comes to hair-brained ideas and embarrassing gaffes, but she is a seasoned politician who understands what it takes to win elections.
While Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive Democrats refuse to give up the notion of impeaching Trump, Pelosi is already looking ahead to 2020, and moving forward with impeachment now would greatly damage the Democratic party’s chances at defeating Trump in the next election.
The moment Robert Mueller released his final report and cleared President Trump of any wrongdoing, the chances of Democrats in Congress successfully impeaching Trump before the 2020 election dropped to almost zero. Even if Nancy Pelosi got on board with impeachment and encouraged enough House Democrats to vote in favor of impeaching President Trump, there is no way that a Republican-controlled Senate is going to convict him given that there is no evidence that Trump has committed any crimes.
Had Mueller’s investigation revealed that Trump did commit treason by colluding with Russia in the 2016 election, Democrats may have had a more likely shot at impeachment. As it stands, though, impeaching President Trump is little more than a pipe dream.
Pelosi knows what AOC fails to understand, that since impeachment wouldn’t pass both houses of Congress and therefore President Trump wouldn’t be removed from office, all it would do is create sympathy for the President, outrage Trump’s voter base and provide the President with plenty of powerful talking points at the worst possible time for the Democrats seeking reelection in 2020.
With no chance of success, Pelosi is right to avoid making such a risky move with the 2020 election right around the corner. In fact, once Mueller concluded his investigation, President Trump even tried to goad the Democrats into impeaching him anyway, knowing what a boost such a mistake would be to his 2020 chances. If it weren’t for Nancy Pelosi’s firm grip on her party, House Democrats likely would have moved forward with impeachment already.
While it’s obvious that moving forward with impeachment would be a mistake, Ocasio-Cortez – like many of her progressive colleagues – is too blinded by her hatred of Trump to see the pitfalls in front of her. Ocasio-Cortez’s attacks on Nancy Pelosi won’t remove Trump from office, but they may end up removing Ocasio-Cortez from office instead.
Pelosi is, after all, the highest-ranking member of the Democratic Party, and continued attacks from a newly elected congresswoman may not be tolerated for much longer.
