How long has it been since the last time you saw Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez say something stupid? Republican politicians like to refer to her as a gift that keeps on giving. Others are trying to coin the term “stupid roulette” to describe her Twitter account.
What we all know is that it’s getting increasingly hard to find a single example of her saying something that isn’t overwhelmingly stupid and wrong. If you really try, can you think of an example?
What you’re about to read won’t help. She added two more “duh” moments to her rapidly growing collection, and it’s a weird mix of funny, sad and scary.
In a town hall with MSNBC, AOC earnestly suggested that presidential term limits were introduced by Republicans to stop FDR from being re-elected. These are her own words, “They [Republicans] had to amend the Constitution of the United States to make sure Roosevelt did not get reelected.”
This wasn’t a simple misstatement. She really dug into this idea and even spun it as a kind of conspiracy theory where Republicans had to change the rules to get power.
Sometimes, you can read something so stupid that it might make you doubt the obvious. Just in case this is one of those times for you, here’s a recap of some of the most well-known history in America. FDR died in 1945 — before the end of WWII. The 22nd Amendment (the one that limits Presidents to two terms) was proposed in 1947. It was ratified in 1951. You can see how the timeline completely destroys her narrative.
Even without that, she completely misunderstands the motivation behind presidential term limits. When George Washington was President, he retired after two terms. It set a precedent that was followed by every president of the country until FDR.
After he died, both parties agreed that Washington had the right idea and that the Constitution should make his example the letter of the law.
As for AOC, this flagrantly incorrect claim is just another Tuesday for her. She has now made a political career out of being belligerently wrong, and that’s a quality we should all find frightening in a legislator.
Historical ignorance is terrible. Economic ignorance is unforgivable. Sure, the average Joe can get some things wrong, but AOC ran on aggressive economic reform. When she demonstrates a failure to understand basic economics, it becomes a very real threat to our country.
This particular gaffe happened on Twitter (of course). AOC decided to teach us the value of a human being by comparing them to bagels, “croissants at LaGuardia are going for SEVEN DOLLARS A PIECE.” “Yet some people think getting a whole hour of personal, dedicated human labor for $15 is too expensive?”
There’s so much wrong here it’s hard to know where to begin. Comparing human worth to bagels aside, Ocasio-Cortez clearly doesn’t know anything about economics whatsoever. You see, food prices (especially for prepared food) started rising sharply in New York in 2016.
Do you know what else happened that year? The state passed a minimum wage of $15 an hour. The plan spread the raises over several years, so each year, prices of goods go up so that small business owners (like say in bagel shops) can keep up with the mandated cost of labor. It’s a classic example of minimum wage pushing inflation. It’s what destroyed the Puerto Rican economy in the early 2000s.
The point here is that AOC’s suggestion of raising minimum wage to make bagels more affordable completely disconnects with the source of the problem. Raising minimum wage is exactly why the bagel is outrageously expensive in the first place.
Look, it’s fun to point at the stupid lady and get a few laughs. Maybe it’s even a coping mechanism to help us face the terror of what she’s trying to unleash upon us through Congress.
At some point, we have to stop laughing and take the threat seriously. The entire Green New Deal was rife with this kind of ignorance. The resolution literally calls to spend more money than the GDP. Yet, in the face of all of this stupidity, a frighteningly large contingent of Americans roots for her. All of mainstream media protects her.
If you want to know how socialism gets its claws into good societies, you’re seeing it right now. It’s the inevitable result of giving power to a madwoman like AOC.
