Democracy may be the fairest and most effective form of government that the world has ever seen, but it still needs the right conditions in order to flourish. One of the most important of these conditions is an informed population that has access to the information necessary for them to make educated voting decisions.
With that in mind, the biggest threat to democracy that our country faces in 2019 may not be what you would expect. It’s not far-left politicians or their socialist agendas, nor is it the corruption that is so prevalent in Washington. Instead, it’s the private companies whose products and services you likely rely on for news and information every single day.
An informed population is the backbone of any democracy, and the United States is no exception. Today, though, the vast majority of information that most Americans have access to is controlled entirely by just a handful of large companies. Most of the major media outlets are owned by just a few large organizations.
This means that any information the average American sees on their television is controlled by a few private companies that are very interested in pushing one narrow viewpoint.
Things don’t get any better when you turn off the TV and turn on your computer. When you research something online, you are still only seeing the results that Google, Facebook, YouTube or whatever platform you are using wants to show you. This wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if these companies were fair and unbiased, but they are most certainly not.
The list of instances where Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others were caught censoring conservative content would fill an entire book. Just like the organizations that own the major media outlets, these gatekeepers to online information have their own agenda and are using their control over the information that Americans see to push that agenda forward.
The worst part is that there is very little stopping these companies from using their control over information to undermine democracy in the United States. Out of respect for the free market and limiting government interference in the private sector, many conservatives are hesitant to go after these companies in the way that they should.
Democrats, meanwhile, have no reason at all to regulate these companies since they are pushing a leftist agenda. The result is a handful of companies with no government oversight that are allowed to control the information that Americans are able to access in any way they see fit without fear of government interference.
The instances of censorship that have come to light so far are simply Google and other companies like them testing the waters. They want to see what they can get away with and how far they are allowed to go. In other words, we can only expect the situation to grow far worse if nothing is done.
Censoring conservative ideas and thought is one of the cornerstones of the modern leftist agenda. However, the fact that companies such as Google and Facebook are on-board with this agenda is what makes it so dangerous. In a world where all of the information that you see is controlled by companies that want to censor conservative thought and push a leftist agenda, it becomes impossible for democracy to flourish.
We at American Liberty Report have seen firsthand just how dedicated Google, Facebook, and others are to censoring conservative platforms, and we’re certainly not alone. We ourselves have been targeted by a leftist journalist who accused us of being Russians intent on shilling for the former Soviet Union. We wont provide the link to the hit piece written about us because we refuse to help them further their propaganda against us and other legitimate news organizations.
If we stand by and allow these companies to shut down any information that opposes their leftist agenda, there is no hope for the survival of conservatism or the survival of our democracy.
The threat presented by these companies is real and is severely underestimated by the average American. Elected officials come and go, and even the most far-left politicians still have to play by a set of rules designed to limit their power and preserve democracy.
Private companies, however, are not constrained by any such rules. There is no law preventing Facebook from censoring conservative platforms since Facebook itself is a private platform outside of government control. The same is true for Google, Twitter, and all mainstream media outlets as well.
If we stand by and allow these companies to continue tightening their stranglehold on the information that Americans see, the results could be detrimental. This is the biggest threat our democracy faces in 2019. Unfortunately, no one is giving this threat the attention that it deserves.
