While President Trump has dominated the headlines, other news still exists. Unfortunately, it’s mostly reported by the mainstream media, and you don’t need to be told what’s wrong with that. While they’ve been going crazy over the shutdown, they tried to sneak some quality fake news past our defenses. They almost got away with it too. You’ve probably heard of the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) dance scandal. You might not yet know the real story.
Admittedly, this scandal took second place to wall/government shutdown coverage. Even by twisted mainstream media standards, that’s the bigger story. Regardless, this particular scandal made the rounds in major news outlets. More than 40 headlines and segments made it very clear that republicans and conservatives were very outspoken against a video of AOC dancing on a rooftop while she was in college.
If you haven’t seen the video, it’s pretty innocent. It’s just an awkward college kid in a student production doing some dancing on a rooftop. There’s really nothing to see. That’s why mainstream media emphasized how ridiculous and immoral it was for conservatives to go after AOC when the video surfaced. Republicans have to hate fun, dancing, happiness and women to behave in such a manner.
They didn’t stop there. The Huffington Post and similar outlets made it clear that this ill-advised conservative attack was really a win for their new princess. They really made a production out of this.
Wait a Minute
Do you remember a single person or conversation that condemned AOC for the video? Sure, you’ve probably seen a few headlines yourself about how much conservatives hated the video, but have you heard any statements firsthand? With hundreds of millions of Americans, it seems inevitable that someone, somewhere said something stupid, but which conservative or Republican leaders had anything at all to say on the topic? You can’t think of a single instance, can you? That’s because this outrage never happened.
This is classic fake news at its best. The smokescreen is that the video is real and it did in fact go viral. What didn’t happen is a mainstream conservative backlash against the video. Most conservatives never even watched it. Most republican leaders had nothing at all to say about it. The truth is that it’s an unimportant video and never impacted any of our lives.
Here’s the other crafty part of the fake news cycle. Two “conservatives” have been quoted in almost every iteration of this coverage. The first is Dan Jordan (we don’t know who he is either). Mainstream media has decided that he is now the ultimate representative of the Republican base. What was his criticism of the video? Here’s the quote, “…High School video of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — Congratulations New York!” That’s it. That’s the Republican outrage. It’s not even easy to tell if this is sarcastic or not. It’s certainly not representative of the base, and it’s hardly a statement worthy of news.
The only other criticism found in this entire fake outrage is from a Twitter user by the handle AnonymousQ1776. That’s great journalism. Somehow an anonymous Twitter handle and a nobody who really didn’t say anything at all now constitute nationwide conservative outrage.
A Great Response
In the midst of this blatant dishonesty, a hero as emerged. Well, Dan Crenshaw was a real American hero long before this, but he scored another big win. In an extremely short, brutal Twitter exchange, he rebuked AOC for pushing this fake news story. She said, “I hear the GOP thinks women dancing are scandalous. Wait till they find out Congresswomen dance too!”
His response is beyond beautiful, “No one thinks this is scandalous. Dance away (was actually pretty good). What is scandalous is increasing income taxes to 70%. It’s wholly unethical for anyone to work a majority of the year just to give their money to the government. Dancing’s great, but ideas matter more.” That looks like total destruction.
Let’s recap what really happened. The collective effort of the mainstream media cooked up a fake story and all jumped on the bandwagon. They did it to try and discredit every conservative in the country and simultaneously make their new champion politician look good. Unfortunately, they did this in an age of information sharing and mistrust of the media. All they accomplished was to make themselves look even dumber, catch their champion in the promotion of this lie and further elevate Dan Crenshaw as the best person in politics.
