President Trump’s decision to pull 2,200 US troops out of Syria is being described by the Washington, DC stupidentsia as the worst thing ever. Or at least, it will be until next week when the president makes another adult decision to benefit America first, at which point that next thing will become the worst thing ever.
The president’s decision to not waste any more American blood and treasure in Syria is being hailed as yet another reason to impeach him. Does anyone doubt that if Trump cured cancer tomorrow, the media would demand his impeachment for putting cancer researchers out of work?
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama started the Syrian civil war in 2011 as part of their idiotic, “Hey, let’s give lots of guns to Islamic terrorist groups and see what happens” strategy. (Actually, it wasn’t that idiotic; the Clinton Foundation raked in a bundle as Hillary negotiated weapons contracts for jihadis.)
Obama hated Bashar al Assad because he was not a Sunni Muslim like all of Obama’s relatives. So, like the ruling party in Egypt and Gaddafi in Libya, Assad had to go so that Obama’s cousins and older brother in the Muslim Brotherhood could have a Caliphate to call their own. This went swimmingly. The Egyptian military threw the Muslim Brotherhood out of power in Egypt and Libya has become a desolate failed state, where African migrants are now sold in open-air slave markets. In other words, Obama’s Sunni gambit in those nations fell apart.
Plus, the Syrian government proved to have more staying power than Obama expected. The Russians and Iran came to Assad’s aid and here we are seven years later with the civil war still ongoing. Most Americans are still shocked to this day that Obama chose to side with ISIS in Syria and, according to the New York Times, paid monthly salaries to ISIS fighters and signing bonuses for every foreign fighter that ISIS could recruit for the attempted Syrian coup.
Here’s the Syrian civil war, boiled down to its essence. See if you can determine exactly what American interest is at stake in the conflict:
ISIS is still trying to overthrow Assad as part of Obama’s “smart diplomacy” which always seemed to side with the jihadiest of jihadis imaginable. Iran, Hezbollah and Russia are helping Assad against ISIS. There are also some Kurds floating around in Syria who helped us out in Iraq. And the Trump administration switched gears and said, “Hey, what happens if we just kill ISIS instead?”
If you believe that pulling US troops out of Syria is the worst thing ever, please answer the following questions – and be specific. What US interest is at stake in Syria? We don’t buy oil from them and our stores are not stocked with posh Syrian goods from some trade deal, so what do we have to lose by leaving? How many of America’s best and brightest young men and women in the military are you willing to have killed, maimed or wounded so that some sort of resolution to the Syrian civil war occurs? If Assad is really as bad as you think he is, how would turning Syria over to ISIS be a better alternative?
But, but, but! Assad is a jerk!
And? So is the Castro regime in Cuba and the Sultan of Brunei. Should we send troops in to topple those regimes, just because we don’t like their leaders or systems of government? By that logic, Angela Merkel of Germany should have launched a coup against the Obama administration when she caught him tapping her cell phone.
But, but, but! Trump abandoned the Kurds!
Actually, no, he did not. But you won’t see it in any mainstream newscast. Trump has actually pulled off a massive foreign policy victory and brought our troops home as a result. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are sending heavy forces into Syria to back up the Kurdish region. In a deal the Trump administration negotiated with Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Russia, the Russian forces in Syria will put a leash on Hezbollah and Iran. Everybody wins except ISIS.
Trump has brought the Syrian civil war that much closer to a resolution. ISIS is basically crushed; the Kurds have backup and our guys get to come home. The left and the media are calling for Trump’s impeachment, despite the fact that he just pulled off another huge foreign policy win.
