With mid-term elections just weeks away Barack Obama is at it again. He’s proudly repeating the myth that his was the most scandal-free presidency in the modern era.
This past May, at a Las Vegas tech conference, Obama joked to an audience that his presidency had been scandal-free. “I didn’t have scandals, which seems like it shouldn’t be something you brag about.”
Obama’s claim that his administration was scandal-free goes unchallenged by many in the press because not only do they believe it, they helped create it.
Joe Klein of Time went further than Obama when he writes that his idol has had “absolutely no hint of scandal” in his presidency.
In a CNN opinion piece Michael D’Antonio tries to paint Obama and President Trump as polar opposites when it comes to scandals by saying:
“No president has seen the number of scandals Trump has. Trump’s record is all the more striking because he follows President, Barack Obama … Coming after No Drama Obama, as he was called, Trump has been one-man chaos machine.”
The Kennedy’s mythos of Camelot was at least, in part, true. The mythically scandal-free Obama presidency is not. Here are just a few examples:
Operation Fast and Furious The press showed early on that it couldn’t bring itself to say Obama and scandal in the same breath. In the hope of tracing guns to Mexican drug cartels, the Obama Justice Department under Eric Holder lost track of thousands of guns. In 2010, one of those guns was used to gun down Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. Then-Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt by Congress because he refused to turn over documents about the operation.
Benghazi Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others lost their lives during an attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya. With only weeks to go before the 2012 election, Hillary Clinton’s State Department blamed the attack reactions to anti-Muslim film rather than a terrorist attack. Emails later showed that Clinton knew the attack was terrorism. To add to the scandal, Obama’s Justice Department convinced a magistrate judge to imprison the filmmaker.
Veterans Affairs A 2014 internal VA audit found “57,436 newly enrolled veterans facing a minimum 90-day wait for medical care.” 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at a single Phoenix VA facility, most of whom died while on a secret waiting list— in an effort to conceal that between 1,400 and 1,600 veterans has been forced to wait months for appointments.
IRS Abuses Obama compatriot, Lois Lerner, led her Internal Revenue Service to target political opponents, in particular, members of the Tea Party. Obama’s DOJ proceeded to refuse to enforce Congress’ contempt citation when Lerner would not answer questions about her agency’s misconduct.
State Department Email In an effort to evade federal open-records laws, Mr. Obama’s first secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, set up a private server. She then used that email server to illegally conduct official business, including transmission of classified material and communications with the president.
Hacking Obama presided over the worst data breach in the federal government’s history, at the Office of Personnel Management. That breach exposed the personnel files of millions of federal employees. That information may eventually be used for everything from identity theft to espionage and blackmail.
Spying on the Press In 2010, the Justice Department spied on Fox News reporter James Rosen, collecting his telephone records, looking at his personal emails and tracking his movements.
Those scandals and more were so severe that 47 of Mr. Obama’s 73 inspectors generals signed a letter in 2014 protesting his administration’s stonewalling of their investigations.
To counter this scandal free myth, biographer Matt Margolis wrote “The Scandalous Presidency of Barack Obama.” In it, he wrote:
“Obama’s supporters in the media, academia, and the grassroots of the Democratic Party are invested in the idea that … he was the archetype of presidential ethics. Nothing could be further from the truth, as the following pages prove, but if they repeat their lies often enough, perhaps others will believe them.”
Democrats can keep pretending that accusations against Obama were merely a partisan, racist plot but that will not undo his legacy of arrogant abuse of presidential power. It all makes the way the press has treated President Trump even more hard to swallow.
