We’ve seen it over and over in recent years; left-wing organizations calling for violence and enacting violence in public against conservatives, Trump supporters, and anyone who openly questions the leftist narrative. Not only have groups like Antifa and Black Lives Matter openly attacked people who disagree with them politically, but they have enjoyed the full support of news media, local governments, and law enforcement.
We have seen case after case where the police stand back while leftist groups riot, mob, and assault people in red hats. We’ve heard reports from individual police and security who say they were told to stand down in the face of Antifa. At the same time, acts of self-defense by conservatives are reported as an initiation of force or at best as mutual combat.
Any time the left is called violent, we are reminded of Charlottesville, a single indecent where a reported white supremacist attacked an Antifa member. To put it plainly, the reporting on this topic is exceedingly one-sided in favor of the openly Nazi-like Antifa.
One of the earliest such events took place in Berkeley in February of 2017. There, student protesters standing in opposition to a Milo Yiannopoulos speech set fire to cars, buildings, and assaulted numerous attendees. As has become the standard, the Left blamed the people who came to hear the talk- and not the violent mob. This was one of the first events surrounding the current cultural shift where security forces actively withdrew into a building and refused to intervene.
President Trump responded to the incident with a tweet threatening to deny public funds to institutions that refuse to provide security for attendants of lectures. He Tweeted, “If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?”
Violent protests like these have been going on ever since. The most recent of such events took place last week in Portland Oregon. There, both Antifa and Black Lives Matters members openly assaulted Trump supporters and conservatives.
Once again, the violence was initiated by the leftist groups. Once again, the police refused to intervene, and once again the conservative victims are being blamed. But this time the leftist news media isn’t just distorting the event- they are outright lying about it.
Over the weekend, CBS reported, saying “In Portland, a massive demonstration by a right-wing group turned violent.” These were the first words out of the mouth of CBS’s Reena Ninan, which she robotically read from a teleprompter.
Of course, it is a true sentence. There was a large protest staged by a conservative group, and the event did turn violent. But the sentence was obviously constructed to hide the fact that it was left-wing groups who initiated the violence.
It is worth noting at this point that the importance of which party initiates violence is something we have been trained to disregard. But natural law dictates, and every child understands intuitively- it is the person who initiates the violence who is to blame.
When the Left attacks the Right, cries of who started it are ignored. Indeed, the police announced in anticipation of such violence that they would consider any physical conflicts to be “mutual combat.” What this means is that anyone who is attacked by Antifa is responsible for their own defense and cannot count on police intervention to save them.
In other words, once again Antifa was given the green light to engage in their Black Shirt-like tactics against the otherwise peaceful Trump supporters.
Ninan went on to say, “Police used tear gas to break up several small scuffles between…and some anti-fascists. Tensions were high as an officer tried to take a sign away from a woman. He ended up shoving her to the ground. When she got up and ran away, she was swarmed by several other officers.”
This makes it sound like the “anti-fascists” were only fighting with each other and did not attack the conservative groups exclusively. It also paints them as the victims of the police, which is deceptive.
Police directed tear gas at the Antifa groups and confiscated weapons from them. Meanwhile, the Trump groups only engaged in acts of self-defense. The violence from the Antifa groups was so intense, that police had to use force to protect themselves, but they largely stuck to their intention to let the conservative groups fend for themselves.
In terms of the “mutual combat,” the conservative groups are being heralded by more objective commentators as the least aggressive and the most successful.
