When the left says, “These go to 11,” they aren’t talking about amplifiers for a rock concert. They’re talking about over the top collectivist rhetoric. The Canadian Psychologist and author Jordan Peterson makes this point, “We know what it looks like when the Right goes too far. The Right goes too far when it comes to racial superiority. But it isn’t as easy to say when the left goes too far. I think the left goes too far when they call for equality of outcomes, rather than equality of opportunity.”
The point inherent in Peterson’s assertion is that all humans are different and cannot be shoved through the same keyhole. The result of such an effort is invariably a totalitarian state.
Apparently, he isn’t the only one who has a clear sense of when the left has gone too far. All across the country, more and more parents are pulling their children out of public schools and beginning homeschool. But the reason isn’t school shootings, as one might assume. The stated reason parents are choosing to educate their children themselves in record numbers is in response to the growing radical leftist rhetoric that’s being taught in schools—much of it without the permission of parents.
A great deal of it is being driven by the poor supervision of government controlled schools. Most noteworthy, is the staggering negligence that lead to the Nikolas Cruz shooting. He was displaying overt signs of threatening intent and violent behavior for months and years before the actual shooting. Yet school officials, police, and even the FBI did nothing. There is a direct connection between school policies that purposefully ignore problem children, and the threatening and bullying behavior all of the other children must endure.
Disturbing as these kinds of problems are, they are still outlier factors. The number one thing that is driving parents to pull their kids out of school is the ratcheting up of left-wing rhetoric in classrooms and on campuses.
The social engineering has become over the top, and in your face. Much of the time, parents aren’t even consulted before their children are exposed to bizarre and radical left-wing ideas. Some of the most unabashedly political examples include; allowing children to take a knee during the National Anthem, forbidding children to wear t-shirts with images of the president, the American flag, or red MAGA hats, and holding pro-trans sexual education classes where teachers encourage children to consider hormone blockers.
Brian D. Ray, the head of Salem, Oregon’s National Home Education Research Institute says, “Most parents homeschool for more than one reason. But when we ask families why do they homeschool, near the top nowadays is concern about the environment of schools, and that includes safety, pressure to get into drugs, pressure to get into sexual activity. It includes all of that.”
In 2017, the Dept of Education surmised that as many as 1.6 million children aged 5 to 17 were homeschool students. At present, that number is all but certain to rise.
Parents and children who engage in home schools have long been the subject of ridicule by those who choose government schools. That means more and more families are making the switch despite significant deterrents.
Homeschooling requires the full-time dedication of at least one parent to stay at home- something that has been economically viable to few families since the recession of 2008. It means a significant loss of income and the sacrifice of at least six hours a day of free babysitting.
For families to turn their backs on all the easements afforded them by public schools, the motivation would have to be quite strong. This might be bad news for the public education system, but it’s potentially good news for the nation. After all, IQs have been dropping by seven points a generation since at least the 1960s. SAT scores have dropped at a commensurate pace. It’s been uncontroversial for decades, public schools are a failure.
That being so, this sudden sea-change is telling us a lot about the American people. It tells us that the incessant doubling down on insane social justice ideas in schools is not working on the majority of Americans. It tells us that mainstream fake news is not having the desired effect. And it tells us the populist movement that put Donald Trump in the White House was not just a flash in the pan.
What we’re looking at here is a massive ideological migration. It’s a popular awakening from sleep-like obedience to clear-eyed, community-minded civic responsibility.
