It’s safe to say that Donald Trump is an admirer of President Reagan and his policies, as Trump has made several comments in the past comparing himself and his vision to that of the former President. While the unfortunate passing of Ronald Reagan means that we won’t ever know what his thoughts would have been on President Trump, what we do know is that Reagan’s daughter Patti Davis is not a fan of the President.
Most famous for posing nude in Playboy twice and earning the nickname of the “rebellious First Daughter”, Davis penned a letter to the Washington Post in honor of the anniversary of her father’s death, describing her dislike for President Trump and presuming to know that her father would have disliked the President as well.
“He would be appalled and heartbroken at a Congress that refuses to stand up to a president who not only seems ignorant of the Constitution but who also attempts at every turn to dismantle and mock our system of checks and balances,” Patti Davis wrote.
“He would plead with Americans to recognize that the caustic, destructive language emanating from our current president is sullying the dream that America once was. And in a time of increased tensions in the world, playing verbal Russian roulette is not leadership, it’s madness,” Davis continued.
The former First Daughter also presumed that her father would take issue with Trump’s rhetoric regarding the media, despite Ronald Regan’s own tumultuous relationship with the press, saying, “He would point to one of the pillars of our freedom — a free press — which sets us apart from dictatorships and countries ruled by despots,” she said.
“He didn’t always like the press — no president does — but the idea of relentlessly attacking the media as the enemy would never have occurred to him. And if someone else had done so, he wouldn’t have tolerated it.”
Davis notedly failed to mention the fact that the attacks between President Trump and the media went both ways. One could easily argue that the President’s remarks regarding the bias of the media pale in comparison to the constant barrage of unfounded attacks that the media levies at Trump, and there’s little doubt that Reagan would have certainly sympathized with a President who is undermined by the press at every turn.
Instead of addressing these points, though, Davis went on to decry the supposed “cruelty” of Donald Trump in regards to his stance on illegal immigration, saying, “He would ask us to think about the Statue of Liberty and the light she holds for immigrants coming to America for a better life. Immigrants like his ancestors, who persevered despite prejudice and signs that read ‘No Irish or dogs allowed.’ There is a difference between immigration laws and cruelty. He believed in laws; he hated cruelty.”
Granted, Ronald Reagan did sign several bills providing amnesty to illegal aliens during his time as President. However, each bill he signed also came with provisions to tighten up border security and prevent further illegal aliens from entering the country.
Trump’s stance on curtailing illegal immigration isn’t at all that far out line with Reagan’s own stance on illegal immigration, especially when you consider the fact that illegal immigration has a much bigger impact on the country today than it did in the time when Reagan was President – both financially and from a national security standpoint given the growing prevalence of MS-13 gang members and other criminals crossing over into the country.
One can hardly expect Patti Davis to accurately portray what her father’s views of President Trump would have been, though. In spite of the fact that Ronald Reagan is to this day a hero of the Republican Party and a conservative icon, Davis herself is a devout Democrat who never saw eye to eye with her father.
Though she may have been closer to Ronald Reagan than just about anyone else who is alive today, her ability to honestly speak on what his current political opinions would have been is limited at best.
Nevertheless, far be it from the Washington Post to turn down the opportunity to attack the President, especially when the source of the attack is the daughter of a conservative icon and a man the President himself admires.
