Following the beatdown that Democrats took in the 2016 election, the party has been experiencing a bit of momentum. Fueled by concern about what President Trump would do once he had taken office, Democrats have enjoyed what analysts have coined a “blue wave”, winning several key gubernatorial races as well as state legislator races.
Now, though, a new poll is showing that this blue wave may be on the verge of collapsing at the worst possible time for the Democratic Party.
Democrats have long relied on the support of two key demographics – young voters and minorities. However, a poll conducted by Zogby Analytics – which is far from being a conservative polling company – shows that Democratic support among these demographics is down in a big way. Over the past few months, Democratic support among millennials has declined 14%. Meanwhile, Democratic support among African Americans has declined 20% during the same time period.
This waning support seems to center around a lack of trust in the Democratic Party when it comes to two key areas – national security and the economy. The Zogby Analytics poll showed that a commanding majority of Democratic voters trust Donald Trump with economic issues more than they trust the Democratic Party.
The poll also showed that a slight majority of Democratic voters trust President Trump with national security issues more than they trust the Democratic Party.
Let’s take a minute to analyze the significance of these results. Ever since Trump was elected, the Democratic Party has built their entire platform around vilifying him and eroding trust in his policies. In spite of this, polls are showing that the Democratic Party’s own base has come to trust President Trump regarding two of the most important issues in politics more than they trust their own party.
Democrats have gambled big on driving voters to vote Democrat based solely on a dislike of President Trump. If the Zogby Analytics poll is any indicator, though, this gamble may be backfiring in a major way.
While the Zogby Analytics is great news for President Trump, though, it isn’t all great news for the GOP. Declines in Democratic support have not necessarily translated into increases in Republican support, as support for Republicans in the poll has basically remained stagnant over the past few months.
Democrats are still expected to pick up seats in the 2018 midterms, largely based on the historical trend for the party that does not control the White House to pick up seats in the following midterm elections.
Nevertheless, even if declines in Democratic support have not translated to increases in Republican support, the number of voters fleeing the Democratic Party alone will go a long way toward leveling the playing field in the upcoming midterms. Right now, the only real cause of the Democratic Party platform is their opposition to President Trump, and Democrats are having a harder and harder time rallying their base behind that cause as the economy continues to boom and Trump continues to have success on the national security front.
Other good news for the GOP heading into the midterms aside from declining Democratic support is the amount of money they are receiving. Just recently, Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson donated $30 million to support Republican candidates in the midterm elections. In 2017, the RNC was able to raise $132.5 million – almost double the DNC’s $67 million haul.
So far in 2018, the RNC’s fundraising has been outpacing the DNC’s fundraising again, even before Adelson’s massive donation. We know from the 2016 election that money spent on a campaign does not always translate to victory, as Donald Trump was able to win the Presidency while spending a fraction of what was spent on the Clinton campaign. Nevertheless, all that extra money certainly isn’t going to hurt the GOP’s chances in 2018.
Between the declining Democratic support in the polls and the RNC’s record-breaking fundraising, the Democratic Party is showing signs that they might not be able to sweep the midterms like was once predicted. With Democrats going on all-in on Trump’s failure in a time when Trump continues to succeed, they may be forced to watch the blue wave collapse before their eyes.
