In the relatively short time that it has been around, Black Lives Matter has faced more than its fair share of criticism. However, now that criticism is starting to come from the most unlikely of places: fellow African-American rights organizations.
No longer wanting to be associated with the Black Lives Matter movement, Black Lives Matter: Cincinnati has changed its name to “Mass Action for Black Liberation”. Though never an official chapter of Black Lives Matter, Mass Action for Black Liberation did co-opt its name and take up its cause – that is until the Black Lives Matter cause evolved into something that members of Mass Action for Black Liberation could no longer put their stamp of approval on.
The group recently explained on their website that, “We can no longer use or identify with the name Black Lives Matter – a rally cry that still has meaning, even if perverted by those pushing it as a brand.”
Mass Action for Black Liberation’s critique of Black Lives Matter did not end there, though, as the group went on to say that Black Lives Matter, “capitalized off a nameless groundswell of resistance sweeping the nation, branded it as their own, and profited from the deaths of Black men and women around the country without seriously engaging, as a national formation, in getting justice for fighting families.”
Increasingly, the Black Lives Matter group has in many ways become the right arm of the liberal agenda, fighting to promote leftist causes regardless of whether or not those causes align with the interests of African-Americans. For example, pro-choice activists have used the Black Lives Matter platform in order to push their own agenda in spite of the fact that black babies are disproportionately killed through abortion.
Whether or not you agree with the initial goals of Black Lives Matter, it’s hard to look at the movement now and see a group that is truly interested in fighting for the civil rights of black Americans rather than pushing an agenda that is in many ways entirely separate from the interests of black Americans.
As far as Mass Action for Black Liberation is concerned, though, the issue has less to do with the Black Lives Matter movement itself and more to do with the actions of its leadership. Mass Action for Black Liberation accuses Black Lives Matter leaders of using their power and platform to book speaking engagements and rake in donations in order to line their own pocketbooks rather than actually fighting for the causes they set out to promote.
Concerning this point, Mass Action for Black Liberation said, “They have gained access to high profile associations, including invitations to the White House and celebrity events; have been on magazine covers; are on the way to profiting as authors and subjects of books; and have accepted numerous awards and accolades as so-called founders of the movement – while families struggle, unassisted, to keep their fights going. So many people on the ground have shared a similar experience: when the reporters leave and the bright lights are gone, so are they (BLM).”
The group also accused Black Lives Matter of taking credit for actions that they were not truly responsible for, including the protests in Ferguson after Mike Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in 2014.
“No chapter of BLM existed in Ferguson. But the media carried and carries the lie that this broad collection of families and fighters exist under a BLM umbrella. They don’t.” said Mass Action for Black Liberation.
“BLM is a small fraction in a larger pie of the Black liberation movement, nationally. There are many organizations and individuals doing work with no affiliation to BLM and with different names. All the powerful sacrifices of autonomous families and groupings around the country are continuously attributed to works of BLM.”
While the average conservative’s critique of Black Lives Matter may differ from Mass Action for Black Liberation’s critique, it’s still beneficial to have a civil rights group call out Black Lives Matter for what it really is – an organization that is more interested in increasing the wealth and platform of its leaders than it is promoting the causes it supposes to stand for.
